Why polyethylene?

  1. Adaptability
    Polyethylene now exists in several forms, such as low-density (PE-LD), medium-density (PE-MD), high-density (PE-HD) and cross-linked (PE-X) polyethylene, as well as linear low-density polyethylene (PE-LLD), polyethylene with suppressed flammability (self-extinguishing type) and materials with increased transparency. Special types are declared for transporting drinking water and contact with food. Our experts will help you choose the most suitable type for your specific application.
  2. Favourable price
    Polyethylene offers a very favourable price-performance ratio and therefore, competes successfully with alternative materials. Polyethylene pipes have comparable service life, corrosion resistance and operating characteristics, and as easy or even easier installation as comparable metal pipes at a better price. Bi-layer (co-extruded) PE-LLD are particularly advantageous.
  3. Low density
    All individual types of polyethylene have a density of less than 1 g/cm3 (1 kg/m3), in other words, polyethylene floats on water. A typical low-density polyethylene has a density of approximately 0.93 g/cm3 (930 kg/m3) and a high-density type is around 0.96 g/cm3 (960 kg/m3). From a practical viewpoint, low weight means significant savings in transport costs compared with steel or copper and is also easier to handle. While laying steel pipes of larger diameters requires a powerful crane, plastic pipes with comparable parameters can be laid by two handy workers.
  4. Easy to connect
    Several methods have been developed for reliable and easy welding with regard to polyethylene pipes. However, we should emphasise that different types of polyethylene are incompatible with each other. This is reflected in the mixtures, and in welding. Therefore, reliable PE-HD and PE-LD pipe connection is only possible with mechanical couplings. Even in this case, we recommend that you consult our experts.
  5. Inert surface
    Pipes made of various types of polyethylene have a smooth inert surface. The result is increased hydraulic efficiency and turbulence suppression with respect to metal pipes. Therefore, older steel distribution can be replaced by polyethylene pipes while maintaining hydrodynamic efficiency. In addition, polyethylene pipes do not corrode, do not become overgrown due to internal corrosion and suppress the formation of deposits.
  6. Ecology
    Polyethylene is a perfectly recyclable material, but intolerance of different types must be considered. While reprocessing polyethylene of one particular type is not a problem, processing different types into a satisfactory material requires special procedures. Technology developed by LUNA PLAST a.s. allows to produce quality pipes from a mixture of different plastics. Coextruded pipes with an outer support layer made from recycled composite material and an inner smooth layer made from high-quality PE-LLD material offer very good quality at a reasonable price.
